ALAN C. OLSON: Because the law is complex, our clients usually have a lot of questions for us. And the first thing they want to know is whether they have a case. And after I've talked with my client at length and looked at their documents, I can make that determination.

Then our client will want to know how long will it take to get a resolution of their dispute. Also, what will it cost them to pursue their claim? And then finally, what are they going to be entitled to when they win their case?

When I'm first contacted by my client and we're talking over the phone, for example, I can readily identify whether they have a potential case. But then to determine the value of the case, how long the case will take, any cost to the client for pursuing the claim, those are questions that I have to answer through a more extensive analysis. The details we provide to our clients are so that they can make an informed decision. Only when they're armed with that detailed information can they choose the best lawyer and understand what is going to be involved in their case from start to finish.
